If you can predict criminality from faces, is it possible to predict other personality traits, too?

@lastpositivist My favourite example of this is a 2020 paper that studied ✨bias✨ in a facial criminality detector. Both authors went on to have permanent academic jobs. https://t.co/2XuR4e17kH

@ProfKarpo @amandajofriesen Hello! Thank you for the workshop! it was real fun. Here some links about what I was talking in my pitch 😁: https://t.co/nJIHVcfwXg https://t.co/3u5TizmsNI https://t.co/NSkuUYgiJM
@Abebab A lot of peer review is turning out to be a complete joke, by people who have no idea what they’re looking at, like for this criminal face detection article (just finally retracted last week) https://t.co/r9W7J3Kxlo
The above article is a critique - both in its fundamental assumptions and experimental issues - of the article "Criminal tendency detection from facial images and the gender bias effect" https://t.co/r9W7J3Kxlo #techtoprisonpipeline
@SpringerNature @Abebab to who we need to refer to discuss this other paper of your editorial group? @SpringerNature https://t.co/hm9LL112R4
@ylecun What about this one? Will not these published papers under the disguise of "academic freedom" promote bigotry? Shouldn't there be ethical boundaries? https://t.co/383I0j6bNB

Either you die young or you live enough for seeing a study based on Lombroso's theories powered by ML. In case you don't know, he was a criminologist that basically tried to justify racial discrimination by combining face features with behavioural traits.

Cywe, my se fakt vracíme do středověku. Ovšem za použití nejmodernějších technologií: https://t.co/srumkdk9gu This work is the first milestone in our attempt to infer personality traits from facial images. Prostě mu to kouká z vočí!

Attempting automatic criminal tendency detection through face images of individuals? Philosophy is needed more than ever. It seems we need to start asking the basic questions again, like what is a face, what is crime? https://t.co/UOOLdDafr8
@Abebab @SpringerNature I’m not an expert, but it seems like a similar paper was published recently in the Journal of Big Data: https://t.co/1WJIb1uxoP
Wow! I thought phrenology was a bad joke from the 19th century...
Surprisingly, there's been earlier work on this. E.g. https://t.co/6H55tHf5i6 which even mention's Lombroso's attempt to do the same thing in the 1800s. I haven't had time to read it, but I suspect in both cases the actual study makes less grandiose claim
@normative Likely they reserve part of the images for test. They then train on the rest. Then they test on the test set. As someone else pointed out, most likely the algorithm picked up on details in the photos. Like maybe an orange jumpsuit. Here's a simi
