@haikugoat @bylinina @Dr_Semantic this would be a decent starting point, i think: https://t.co/sKCyG0O8OL
I made a similar argument about the fluency required of sequential visual narratives, meaning that research using them uncritically may be confounded, whether about narrative, temporal, social, or sequential cognition 10/ https://t.co/Gpj2yN69dU

Furthermore, illustrated books often use sequences of images, which also require a fluency to understand. As I note in this paper (and in my upcoming book), children don't begin to comprehend the sequence of sequential images until around 4 to 6 years old

@evaristotwitt No previews just yet, and the cover is still being finalized. The book is all about the ways in which comics are comprehended and under what conditions are they not understood as expected. It expands a lot on what's in this paper: https://t.

I’ve long said that it’s important to teach the DISCOURSE behind (multimodal) communication and not simply expect students to understand just because they’re looking at “pictures” (the visual ease assumption) ... Check this out!

@svencomicsart Ok great! Then the paper I'd most recommend is this recent review paper of mine, where I have a whole section on kids' development of visual narrative understanding https://t.co/Gpj2yNnK5s
Btw, the theory of language in this book is mirrored by my own theory of the architecture of the visual language used in visual narratives https://t.co/Gpj2yN69dU
