There are several pillar sites spread around Lake Turkana, all radiocarbon dated to ~5200-4200 years ago, exactly when cattle, sheep & goats were introduced to the region. That & other evidence suggests pillar sites were made by early herders (fig:

A fantastic new paper on the bioarchaeology of 5000-year-old megalithic pastoralist sites in northern Kenya. It includes reference to a crazily complex 2x2m excavation unit absolutely jammed with burials. Beautiful work.
