ALWAYS look for boundary conditions. We know that #retrievalpractice is (typically) very helpful. In this study (psychology & neuroscience), retrieval practice helped remember emotionally neutral words, NOT negative words. "Nothing works everywhere.

This seems be a REALLY interesting study, suggesting that retrieval practices are less effective for 'emotionally aroused' people. Whole child and research-alignment dialogues are usually quite separate in K–12. This is an interesting connection point. #
This makes intuitive sense. If you throw negativity into the retrieval task, you're distracted from retrieving. (That said, I have an anecdote or two of students saying "I got that right on the exam because I remembered you yelling at me, THINK!" ...)
