@Disstillmyname @BStulberg sure, here's a link to a debunking of happines pie showing it is both conceptually and empirically wrong: https://t.co/fU2S1I8WmY
The 'happiness pie' - the idea that life circumstances plays only a small role in individual happiness while much is due to choice (intentional activity) - is hugely influential. What's the evidence for this? Not much according to this devastating analysis

Nature and nurture are not independent of each other. On the contrary, molecular genetics (study of the structure and function of genes at the molecular level) shows that they constantly influence one another | 2019 https://t.co/mKllhubCvR https://t.co/TD
@blakeaburge @heykahn There are empirical and conceptual problems with this claim, see: https://t.co/b3m8Cmweq7
@heykahn This is based on flawed and outdated research. See https://t.co/p60qA3pXv4. Even the originator of the "happiness pie" model has "retired" it: https://t.co/0Qozjn4aqQ
However, as people like @sTeamTraen & @dingding_peng have pointed out, the figure for circumstances may be higher than 10%, and even if only 10%, this doesn't apply to everyone (it's about populations, not individual-level variation, which can differ)

This is what a critical review looks like. Examining the 'Happiness PIe' theory: A) heritability of chronic happiness is 75%, not 50%, B) DEMOGRAPHICS explain 10%, LIFE EXPERIENCE explain 22% C) None of this is causal. from @sTeamTraen @dingding_peng htt

@dingding_peng and I did this for https://t.co/p60qA3pXv4. We still had a simple numerical error in the article, on a calculation that only I did. In my head. Because it "didn't need to be coded". ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ /4
If you hadn't already worked out where popular Lyubomirsky-influenced "happiness pie" thinking goes wrong, this article will see you right. Happiness happens through complex interactions over time, not as a sum of genes + environment + choices. https://t.c
@sirileknes I guess it depends on the definition of old, but @sTeamTraen and I wrote one that was published 14 years after the original article (https://t.co/v2j5KKFyhD). Feels like half a lifetime to me...
Lets be more cautious about the well accepted "happiness pie" https://t.co/OtRfkt4SDr
@kph3k, what do you reckon? I have been seeing this one pop up every now and again. I had to look into it. Didn't take long, it seems like it's hokum. I present the quick sum of it all in this abstract: https://t.co/XpCIDb6NBk https://t.co/xj6qkQ2gek
@drchatterjeeuk @BlueZones This was really interesting, lots of good ideas, but the happiness pie idea has recently been discredited https://t.co/jyUaj314Gv And I was disappointed he didn’t answer your great question about the relevance of blue zone eating
