@AaronChalfin Yes, a lot of crime count stuff is more or less entirely driven by the amount of people.. More people, more crime (though lessso for vandalism and similar crimes, at least in Sweden)..
@AaronChalfin @JohnFPfaff Important topic, thus shamelessly inserting own work on the topic:

@Rafa_Mangual @MelissaTweets Sweden is not NY ofc, might be different over there. But still worth keeping this stuff in mind. I have a couple papers on the topic if you are interested, on Sweden tho ofc. https://t.co/xFtPfWALko https://t.co/vr3vfadYf5

@wslvr Interesting that they used population at risk measurements, that is not typical for hot spot analysis. I did something similar but on a more micro scale, using bus stops and weighting with number of passengers https://t.co/xFtPfWALko

Min studie Malmö visade tvärtom, flest brott city - men högst risk utsatta områden:
@CrimAndyW @CoryPHaberman I use bus trip data to model pop at risk, see paper here (it's also pinned to my twitter profile, and it was for a special issue on RTM so doing some of that too): https://t.co/xFtPfWALko

(2/2) In my opinion, this shows that researchers need to make sure environmental features are included in an analysis for theoretical reasons (i.e. is their support for suspecting these features can generate crime?) rather than just data availability https
(1/2) Insightful study for anyone interested in spatial approaches to crime forecasting. Key takeaway from Manne’s paper: criminogenic nature of spatial crime generators may simply be due to the on-street population of surrounding area. https://t.co/5udJ7I
