These reports weren't wrong-they correctly repeat claims made by a 2005 research paper w/ ~800 citations. However, this study estimates turf lawns to be much larger then other studies and then assumes ALL of these lawns are irrigated! 2/5 https://t.co/SAlj
@MurphyAtticus @tpoi DOI: https://t.co/jJBpfVT7bz Perhaps the newly launched Dynamic World product launched by Google has an updated estimate
@amtcastle @evornithology I was impressed to find out that the estimated total area of lawns in the US is ~3x bigger than irrigated corn crops 😱 https://t.co/185kU8SgLy
Finally- despite lawns taking up ~5% of the area of useable agriculture, lawns use 60% the total water resources of other agriculture like orchards, cotton, pastureland, wheat, and hay. https://t.co/h4k63lerUE
@treebiology @Botanygeek that lawn number comes from this paper: https://t.co/XtdMe6DcC4

I was talking to a superintendent yesterday about how subdivisions going in upstream from him had increased the water flow and potential flooding on his course.
Really neat info in the thread below, about mapping newly impervious land. We know from Milesi et al (2005) that impervious surface area is related to... turfgrass area! https://t.co/mXTo0NzdCk https://t.co/DfVb7w3Mhk

Grass lawns cover over 40 million acres in the US, about 2% of total land. That's a lot of land that could be wildflowers! By comparison corn and soybean each cover about 90 million acres. Lawn data from this paper: https://t.co/b50Pl4YcDX https://t.co/Cw
@DrSethMurray I've always been amazed that our largest 'crop' is lawn (though not a USDA land use category) at 40M acres (Milesi et al 2005 https://t.co/O3hXFew7Nx) compared to USDA stats c. 80M a food crop and 400M a total cropland.
